Let's Face It: How Your Facial Features Influence Jewelry Choice

Did you know that your facial features dictate what jewelry you should be wearing? The shape of your face and the length and girth of your neck determine which jewelry shapes and lengths look best on you. This holds true for both earrings and necklaces.

Let's look at facial shapes first! The four most common facial shapes are oval, round, square, and heart shaped.

Oval faced ladies can wear almost any necklace or earring length and shape they want. For the rest of us who are not so fortunate, here are some basic rules of thumb.

If you have a round face, you would want to chose earring shapes that visually elongate your rounded features. Think, drop earrings, fringe earrings, and anything else that makes your face look longer. Stay away from hoop earrings, and earrings that primarily feature round components. The similar rule applies to necklaces. You would want to choose a longer necklace in order to add visual length to your features. Pendant or charm necklaces help this lengthening effect as they create a slimming “V” shape that leads the eye away from your face. Make sure to avoid rounded chokers, as they would only emphasize the roundness of your face.

If you have a heart-shaped face, you should do exactly the opposite. Roundness of a choker would help visually smooth away the planes and angles of your face. You would also do well to wear hoop earrings. The same goes for those with long, rectangular faces.

Are you square-faced? You might be able to wear a choker, but you would also want it to somewhat visually elongate your face, so a good choice for you might be a choker with some type of pendant on it. Also, if you are wearing round earrings, make sure that they also include an elongating dangle, fringe, or drop.

Next, look in the mirror, and pay attention to your neck! Does it appear long or short? Slender or wide? A wise thing to do before buying a necklace is to buy a flexible tape measure and measure the circumference of your neck, especially if you are buying a collar or choker. These two necklace lengths look best on slender necks, as do large, circular earrings.

When purchasing a choker, add 2 inches to your neck measurement, or add 4 inches if you are considering a princess length necklace. Also, if your neck is wide and you still want to wear a choker, make sure you add an inch or two more to your neck measurement to assure the choker fits comfortably. Despite its name, a choker necklace is not supposed to be so tight on your neck that it literally chokes you.

If you have a short neck, you are wise to forgo chokers altogether. The necklace length that would suit you best and visually elongate your neck is between 20 and 24 inches. As for earrings, stay away from large hoops and very long earrings. Instead, go for delicate drop style or shorter chandelier earrings that will visually elongate your shorter neck.

There are two more things that should inform your jewelry style choice: your body type and height. I 'll talk about those in another blog post, so stay tuned. In the meantime, to shop some of our bling, click the link below ⬇️
